If Shortening Catches Fire....

Have you read your shortening tub lately? HAHAHA This thing catches fire?!... I just don't get it, why is shortening SO flammable? I should be careful.. I just bought a nice 3 pound tub of it :)

Anyway... So.. I decided to finally take the Wilton Cake Decorating Class at Michaels. I finally had the time and energy AND space to decorate cakes. Plus being at home meant that I had more mouths to feed. YAY for non-trashed goods! I had my first class on Tuesday, and well, we just learned how to... make frosting.. basically haha. No piping techniques were taught, but being an overachieving student... I decided to get ahead. Practice makes perfect right? This wasn't the most beautiful cake, I wouldn't actually decorate a cake with that much fru fru, and frosting.... but I had to learn how to make the frosting.. the Wilton way, using basically everything... Wilton. I spent a lot of time and trips to various stores gathering my supplies for the class the past few days. I basically have a whole tool box full of Wilton cake decorating things... but I'm still not done. So here's what I've learned so far.

Before this course, I have practiced piping with tips onto cupcakes, and cakes... I even attempted a rose. I never actually made a rose, and figured out why. Meringue Powder. My frosting was not thick and sturdy enough, thus, falling petals.

I took over the dining room table : ) It's not like anyone uses it anymore, my parents eat in the kitchen nowadays, yay, more room for me! I also have the entire den to spread out my junk, but I don't like working down there. Look at my tool box! : ) Organization is key for any decorating.. esp when there are so many little things to account for. Breadman makes and appearance in the back! : ) I've made a few rosemary loaves while at home...but there's just no room in my kitchen for that huge thing.

I'm a good student : ) I practice before the lesson... hehehh

Yea.. so this was WAY ahead of where I'm at.. I was trying to learn how to do shell borders, it's actually pretty hard to learn by just reading it, so I just experimented with the tip ...

My tips collection : )

So after I got the hang of lesson 2, I decided to bake a cake to frost... this is a hot milk sponge cake. It's alright, kind of dry, and dense, not the typical spongy cake I'm used to... but it'll do.

My frosting is not perfect... and i didn't have enough to cover the cake. I really don't like frosting, this one was TOO sweet, but I couldn't play around with the measurements because I needed certain consistencies for certain shapes... : (

ta da... bleh. I really didn't like it. I like the border, but... I couldn't figure out what to do with the middle with the remaining frosting! So I took this cookie cutter my sister just bought, and stamped it on for the shape, outlined it, and then piped the stars into it. My mom made me laugh during the outlining process.. hence.. the ugly shape hahah. I think I work best by myself...

Porous ... I mean it's a cake... but .. even with half the sugar cut out of it..the finished product was still too sweet! I hate wilton's frosting : / Wilton's buttercream... does not have butter, it's quite an artificial loving company... most of their extracts are "artificial"... so is their buttercream.. it's more like CriscoCream frosting...ewww

Hot Milk Sponge Cake (I think this is a really old recipe...)

2 eggs ( room temperature)
1/2 cup sugar ( less would be best with this frosting maybe even down to a third... original was 1 cup.. eeeek!)
1 cup flour ( cake flour would have been better I think)
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup whole milk
2 tbsp butter

1. preheat oven at 350, mix eggs on high for 4 minutes
2. add sugar, and mix on med for 4 minutes
3. add flour and baking powder to mixture, mix to combine
4. heat up the milk and butter until almost boiling, pour into mixture, stir to combine
5. place in an 8 inch cake pan that was sprayed with PAM for baking, bake for 20-25 minutes ( 20 was good for me), cool on a rack, level, and frost

I hope to learn so much more ... but what I really am antsy to learn is how to make a Wilton Rose : ) Everything else, is quite ordinary...
