So... baking pie wasn't so easy... I broke my rolling pin...

Blame IKEA hahaha...(yea... I don't know what I was thinking buying a rolling pin from IKEA...).. but never fear! My fully stocked kitchen comes to the rescue! I have 4 rolling pins!... er.. now 3.. made of wood, plastic, and metal... yes talk about a strange collection... : )

Anyway, I wanted to make a pie from scratch. I never had enough mouths to feed back in the good ol' college days so I never really made pie.... especially from scratch. Last year I made a sweet potato pie and an apple crisp pie. That was tasty. I bought frozen pie crusts because I was lacking in a lot of equipment. So since it's Thanksgiving, I decided that this would be the best time to make a classic apple pie, the old fashion way (kind of.) This ... took me 2.5 hours to make from start to finish. My mom peeled the apples in lightening speed, and helped me roll out the dough. My sis helped me etch some of the leaves, because the leaves were giving me nightmares. Sigh. So here it is, apple pie, I used "Grandma Ople's Apple Pie" from AllRecipes.com and reduced the sugar to 1/3 cup each (white and brown) and added 1 tsp of cinnamon. I used a pie crust recipe from the book "The Practical Encyclopedia of Baking" ( this was my first cookbook : ).. I got it 8 years ago ... I think it launched a lot of weird experiments.) I free-formed the leaves on the apples, and stamped out leaves for the pie crust rim. All in all, this was a great learning experience. I read up and watched a lot about making pies. Rolling out the pie crust was harder than I thought. It took a lot of muscle as well as a second rolling pin... haha. My pie turned out ok, nothing like the picture in the book, but I didn't have enough dough to cover it all. Oh well, the true test is the taste... and that won't be for another few days : )

- Pre-Baked. It was pretty! I just wished I wasn't so conservative on the dough.. a complete leaf top would have been perfect!

- Post Baked: It came out of the oven oozing the bubbly goodness from apples/syrup mixture ... my house smells wonderful : )

- I'm not used to taking pictures of anything this large... a 10 inch pie is considered "large"... Baking a pie was definitely something I'm not used to and don't plan on doing it often... this pie has 2.5 sticks of butter..... AHHHHHHHH.. oh well at least I get my serving of fruit : )
