Hearts Diamonds and Spade Birthday Cake

I've been so MIA lately.... especially to this blog : ( ... I have not forgotten about it completely, I've just been too lazy to post up any pictures... I have a ton of pictures on my camera that are waiting to be uploaded into my computer.. Anyway, here is a poker cake I made for my boyfriend's birthday. This cake survived a few car trips, trains, and a plane ride. Whew. I was checking it at every stage. I didn't make this elaborate, I just needed it to be simple... and shows something that he likes. So I had to rush to finish my cake because I got home from work late : / . It took me many hours to figure things out, but I think I'm ok with the outcome. It's not as clean as I would have liked it to be. I sketched out the design a week before, it looks similar, but just messier. : ( I wish I had more time. I have not worked with fondant in almost 3 months, so scrambling to find my tools was quite a challenge.

So here it is... it's a 2 layer red velvet cake, decorated with marshmallow fondant. This cake sat out for 3 days before it was consumed : / or well.. not really consumed because of the skeptics. It was perfectly fine inside because of the seal the fondant gives it... but I think I was the only one who could understand that....and trust me.... I do not eat food that has been left out for a long time that I know should not be eaten.... ( i.e. meat... pizza...leftovers.) I was sure to use shortening as the frosting so that no diary products were left outside for that long. I've had disasters with refrigerating fondant due to condensation, so I didn't want to spoil the cake by doing so. Next time... I'll plan it better, maybe I'll just buy a cake.. if I had to travel. As sad as I am to admit this... but.. the majority (I'm talking like 80%+) of my fondant cakes end up in the trash anyway... which is kind of a reason why I stopped doing that and focused my attention and efforts on smaller desserts. I'm kind of sick of the cakes.. weirdly...I think I made too many.... : /

I wish the squares were more even... and that I took more time in the detailing of the poker chips.. I really hated that blue color, but had so much green fondant left... I had to use that to make another color .. and that turned out of be this funky blue-green. I sculpted those small hearts by myself, I think they're adorable. I used a small petal cutter and did the middle thing with a thin spatula. The spade is an upside down heart, and I free-handed the stem.

This is how I packed the cake. I had this circular box that fit this cake perfectly. I used the ribbons as leverage to get the cake out. When I was traveling with it, I put a piece of saran wrap on top and cushioned the sides with packing peanuts. This cake was not held down by any glue... neither were the decorations. I was amazed none of them fell off...
I made red velvet cupcakes as well for the trip. Here is what I came up with : ) Cute.. but I hate the color! haha.. such a weird combination.. but oh well. it's kind of Spring-y... I'm done with cupcakes for awhile. I found my go-to red velvets.. so I guess it was a mission accomplish!
