Red velvet where? Ok... I'm there! That's usually my response to when I hear the words "red velvet" in a sentence. I've been wanting to try this place for many many years. I remember driving past it and seeing how packed it was throughout the day... and then it closed. That really puzzled me. This restaurant was doing so well, it was a trendy celebrity type of place, but still a place where mostly locals can come to gather and get good food. So, apparently it was closed down due to vermin? I don't know exactly. I think they said due to remodeling and rotting wood? haha.. whatever the case, it's back. And I ended up walking 1 mile there, and 1 mile back just to get a taste of that red velvet. Crazy right?
Doughboys- Whenever I hear the word doughboys I think of.. Pillsbury..haha I don't know, I love that cute lil white doughy creature! This place specializes in breads and is famous for its red velvet (2 things I love A LOT.) I was talking to my sis when I headed out on my journey to find food, initially to the Farmer's Market by the Grove LA, and decided to change my plans and head further down the street. It was worth it. I got there at around 3PM on a beautiful Sunday, it wasn't too hot, but wasn't too cool, just perfect. My sis said her friends went there yesterday and that it was no longer closed. I knew it wasn't too far so I google maps it. That led me into the alley ways...that's strike 2 for iphone google maps that needs some serious updating.... (first being last Friday when it led me into a dead end/telling me to drive through a fence... ugh...) But, it's alright. I still know my LA directions pretty well, for being a tourist and what not.. now.. haha. The restaurant wasn't crowded. I thought it would be, kind of like Joan's on Third (which was right down the street) ... the outside seating was full, but the inside tables were mostly empty. I was seated right away. yay :)
Arnold Palmer- Must be the drink of choice on the street. I had this when I went to Joans on Third, and well, you can't go wrong. It was almost evening, so I didn't want to kill myself with so much caffeine, but I guess it did something.. it's 2am.. and I'm still up blogging... the lemon kind of ended up giving me a lot of heartburn as the meal went on. : ( $1.75 for a large glass of that? Awesome... at that price I don't feel so guilty ordering a drink besides just plain water haha...
Pulled Pork Sandwich- Yum, sandwich. I was expecting a sandwich, you know, 2 pieces of bread and some meat in the middle? What I got? This flat bread/ naan-ish type of thing. It was sooo unbelievably soft delicious... I'd just go there for this bread, if I had to. The meat itself was good, a tad on the salty side, but full of flavor. I think the combination of the bbq sauce and lemon in the drink resulted in me having heartburn for the next hour or so.... but yea, the portion size was HUGE. I ate half because...well, you know. I always save room for dessert, and that was my main reason why I wanted to go.
Red velvet- omg, this thing is HUGE. it's like a mini cake! It was SO red, that I'm sure it stained my tongue red, well I did touch it slightly, and.. the red did in fact transfer to my fingers haha... yea.. amazing. This was mainly cake with a piped top of cream cheese frosting, with crumbled red velvet on top. AHH... and the taste? YUMMY! I got too excited. haha... but yea. It was good, very moist, a tad too sweet ( normally red velvet cakes aren't too sweet.) It was very dense, not at all light and airy. This didn't taste like sprinkles. It tasted more like the red velvet layered cake from "Sweet Lady Jane." I had a few bites.. maybe 1/4 of it and packed up the rest. The cake was $6 which isn't too bad considering the size of the cake, how dense it is, as well as the area the restaurant is in. The rest is in the fridge right now. I still have around 1.5 days left here, so I will try to finish it up... yep.. can't wait.
Would I come back? Sure! The prices were extremely reasonable (Most sandwiches were $9.50 and the portions were quite generous.) The staff was attentive and nice, and most importantly, the food was good. Thanks Doughboys for finally opening up again.
Thanks to everyone who recommended it, you know who you are, or well.. I guess I will tell you all when I get back home haha : ) I surely did enjoy eating my slice of cake!
